Our Joint Statement

The Alliance to Rectify the Name of Taiwan

                  Kaidagelan Boulevard, May 11, 2002

  Our Appeals:

  1. We identify Taiwan as our own country. We are all Taiwanese. The country of the Taiwanese is called Taiwan. We sincerely ask the governments and peoples in the world, including the People’s Republic of China, to call us Taiwanese, not Chinese. Our country is named Taiwan, not China.

  2. We urge the Ministry of Education to compile anew textbooks for all school levels that will be Taiwan-centric so that our posterity would develop a uniform identification with Taiwan and be proud to be Taiwanese.

  3. We ask the state-run enterprises such as Chinese Petroleum Corporation, China Steel Corporation, and China Airlines first to get rid of terms like “China” and “Chinese” in their titles.

  4. We urge the Ministry of the Interior that administers registrations of civic organizations to disallow the use of “China” in their titles for all civic organizations to be registered in Taiwan, and encourage them to use the name of “Taiwan.”

We also urge the Ministry of Economic Affairs that is in charge of registration matters to encourage those companies that are incorporated in Taiwan to use “Taiwan” rather than “China” in their titles, unless they are branches of the companies registered in China.

  5. We urge the Legislative Yuan to act to encourage the registered civic organizations and companies to remove “China” or “Chinese” in their titles while putting a deadline for correction.

  6. We urge the government that all overseas missions be entitled “Taiwan,” and apply for membership in the United Nations and in other international organizations under the name of “Taiwan”.

  7. We urge that a new Taiwan constitution be enacted, and “the Taiwan Nation” or “the Republic of Taiwan” be the new official title of our country.

  Our Action Program:

  1. The year 2002 is the promotion year to rectify the name of Taiwan. The aim of “the 511 Parade for Rectifying the Name of Taiwan” is to enlighten all the Taiwanese with the meaning and importance of name rectification, and to demonstrate its urgency to the government.

  2. The year 2003 will be the action year to rectify the name of Taiwan. Next year, we will examine the achievements on name rectification of the governmental departments concerned. If they fail to show affirmative attitudes and significant achievements, we will call out more Taiwanese to stand out for more active actions and appeals on Mother’s Day of 2003.

  3. We affirm our support for the President who fights for rectifying the name of Taiwan, and in the future, we will support those political parties, office candidates and presidential candidates that fight for the same goal.
