Subject: Taiwan Independence

To Whom It May Concern:

A nation is a people who share common customs, origins, history, and

language. As you will see, the island of Taiwan fulfills all the

requirements as a sovereign part of China.

1. Chinese on the mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and around the world all

observe, celebrate, and practice certain customs exclusive to Chinese.

2. All Taiwanese, with the exception of the indigineous race, Shan(1) Di(4)

Ren(2), who represent less than 5% of the population, are of Chinese Han race.

3. Taiwan's beginning was in 1580 when the Portuguese discovered the island.

In 1624, the Dutch took over Taiwan and governed it until 1661 when the Ming

and Qing Dynasties controlled Taiwan. As a result of the Treaty of

Shiminoseki in 1895, Taiwan was given to imperialist Japan. After the end

of WWII, the Nationalists retreated to Taiwan and established the Republic

of China. Of the 400 years of Taiwan's history, over 300 have been under

Chinese rule.

4. The official language of the Republic of China is Mandarin Chinese,

which is spoken on the mainland. Other dialects used in Taiwan such as

Hakka and Fujian are also spoken on mainland China.

Some view the KMT as an oppressive regime, who ruled Taiwan with an

iron fist. The KMT has taken an island from poverty to a nation with one of

the highest standards of living in Asia and has gradually established the

first free and democratic political system in the 5000 year history of

China. It is crucial for you to acknowledge the fact that Taiwan would be

under Communist China rule if not for the Nationalists. The establishment

of the Republic of Taiwan is an attempt to overthrow the Republic of China,

and therefore an act of treason. I hope you take the time to reconsider

your views and realize the illegitimacy of an independent Taiwan.

                                             Ray Chiao #34 GO ROCKETS!!!

                                             LONG LIVE THE ROC!!! \(^o^)/
