Dear Sir/Madam:
I support Taiwanese Independence based on the principal of self
determination.
However, it is wrong for you to twist a purely political issue into a
cultural issue. There is no denying that you are Chinese. Your webpage is
in Chinese, you all have Chinese names, you certainly look Chinese, you
celebrate Chinese new year, you eat Chinese food... Certainly, the island
has its own unique customs and dialect. But, within the Mainland, there
are numerous ethnic groups with their own dialects, customs, etc. Even
the city of Shanghai has its own dialect.
I understand that due to the small size of the island when compared to the
mainland, Taiwan cannot achieve independence in the name of ROC. (Unlike
the former east and west Germany)
But your steadfast denying of your Chinese heritage is absurd. In our
increasingly globalized society, please do not be blinded by
provincialism.
Sincerely,
Cathleen Shue
